Astro websites

A website built as plain pages, sent to the browser with almost no JavaScript. Fast to load, cheap to host and straightforward to keep working.

Pages built once and served as files, rather than assembled on every visit

Astro builds a website into ordinary HTML pages ahead of time. There is no database to query and no application waiting to respond when somebody arrives, so the page is already finished before the request reaches it. JavaScript is added only to the parts that genuinely need it, which is why these sites tend to feel immediate on a phone and on a slow connection. It suits a site whose content changes on your schedule rather than second by second: marketing pages, service and sector pages, case studies and a blog. It is a poorer fit for anything that has to react to each visitor as they arrive, such as a logged-in account area or live stock.

What goes into an Astro build

The decisions that shape what the site costs to build, what it costs to run and how easily it is changed afterwards.

  • Shipping less to the browser

The default is no JavaScript at all, and anything interactive is added deliberately rather than inherited from a framework. Less code to download is the simplest way to make a page arrive quickly.

  • Structure before templates

Work out what pages exist and how they relate before anything is designed. On a static site the structure is the thing that is expensive to change later.

  • Editing without a developer

Content lives in a CMS you can reach, so copy, images and prices are yours to change. A build runs when you save, and the new pages replace the old ones.

  • Hosting that stays cheap

Files on a CDN rather than a server running a language runtime. That is most of why an Astro site costs so little to keep online, and why traffic spikes are uneventful.

  • Findable by default

Real HTML in the first response, so a search engine sees the page without executing anything. Titles, descriptions, sitemaps and structured data are part of the build rather than a plugin.

  • Moving an existing site

Addresses are preserved or redirected deliberately, so what you have already earned in search is not spent on the rebuild.

  • “Really happy with how our new website has turned out. We wanted something that looked professional, was easy for customers to use and showed off the work we do, and that's exactly what we've got. The whole process was really easy, and it was great having someone who understood what we were after and could bring our ideas to life. Would happily recommend!”

When does Astro make sense?

It suits a site that is mostly content and mostly read. If your pages explain what you do, show the work and ask for an enquiry, there is rarely a reason to put a server in front of them. The result loads faster than the equivalent WordPress site, costs very little to host, and has fewer moving parts to break or patch.

It is the wrong choice when pages have to differ for each visitor as they arrive: accounts, carts with live stock, dashboards. Those need something running at request time. Plenty of sites are mostly the first kind with a small amount of the second, which is a sensible middle ground rather than a problem.

Planning an Astro website

  • Can I still edit the content myself?

Yes. The content sits in a CMS, and saving a change triggers a rebuild that publishes within a couple of minutes. The delay is the main practical difference from WordPress, where a change is live the moment you press update.

  • Is this the same as a headless WordPress site?

They overlap. Both separate the content from the pages people see. Headless WordPress keeps WordPress as the editor, which suits a team already trained on it or a large existing library. An Astro build with a lighter CMS has less to run and less to maintain, so it is usually the cheaper of the two to own.

  • What happens when I need something interactive?

It gets added to that part of the page only, rather than turning the whole site into an application. A filterable list, a calculator or a booking widget are all normal. The point is that the rest of the page is not paying for them.

  • Will moving to Astro affect our search rankings?

It should not, provided the addresses are handled properly. Every existing URL either keeps working or redirects to the page that replaced it, and we check that after launch rather than assuming it. Speed improvements may help, but we would not promise a particular outcome.

  • Who can work on it after you?

Anybody comfortable with modern web development. Astro is open source and widely used, the code is yours, and it is plain HTML, CSS and TypeScript underneath rather than anything proprietary to us.

  • Does it work with forms and tracking?

Yes. Forms post to a service that collects the submissions and emails them to you, and analytics or tag management are added in the usual way. Neither requires a server of your own.
